“Why are ya doing this? Good Karma?”
We spent July 4, 2009 handing out free beach bags, sunscreen, Hot dogs, Hamburgers, cold water and plenty of shade on the North End of Carolina Beach. What a cool way to spend a hot day!
The day actually Kicked off two afternoons before! In anticipation of a massive crowd on the beach, we headed down to set up 8 canopies and a full Beach Volley Ball Court. By the time I pulled off the beach leaving my friend Tom to man the gear for the night, the beach was filling up all around us. When I headed back down Friday evening, the wait to enter the beach was two hours long. . . at 8:30 p.m.! When I shuttled two guys back to Monkey Junction at midnight, the line was still past the two hour mark! So, my plans of spending the night on the beach with the Southside Crew were lost.
Saturday morning, July 4! Ready for an amazing day, Kim and I headed to CB at 7:30 a.m. We jumped into line at 7:50 a.m. I ran back off the beach to pick up the next crew at 9:15. This time, we wouldn’t get back to the “fort” for three hours! Wow, what a hot place to spend three hours. What did we do? Started handing out Beach bags!
Four hours of serving 300 hamburgers, 300 hot dogs, almost 1000 bottles of water and hundreds of beach bags later, we were loading up and tearing down. What an amazing day! So cool to make people smile. Of the comments I fielded, the coolest was, “Why are ya doing this? Good Karma?” “Something kind of like that,” I told him. “Just something we like doing! Love making people smile! That’s all!”
We knew many wouldn’t remember what we did for them on Sunday, but they’d have a bag full of stuff with a logo and website on it. We plant seeds. God does the rest.
